Postdoctoral Associate Aeronomy problems involving the variability of upper atmosphere and ionosphere on various time scales and their connection to the lower and middle atmosphere. Some related research interests include the atmospheric tides, planetary waves, ionospheric electrodynamics, time-series analysis, satellite data analysis, and empirical modeling.I come from a farming family in the Punjab plains of India. I pursued a B.Sc. in computer science from Doaba College and M.Sc. Physics from Thapar University, Patiala. Then I received my Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Geomagnetism (IIG), Mumbai. During my Ph.D., I worked on aeronomy problems related to the dynamics and electrodynamics of the upper atmosphere. My Ph.D. research involved the estimation of atmospheric tides and equatorial electrojet currents from space and ground-based observations. For this purpose, I analyzed data from the NASA-TIMED satellite, DLR-CHAMP satellite, worldwide magnetic observatories, and a Medium Frequency radar in Tirunelveli. During my Ph.D., I received the 3-month SCOSTEP Visiting Scholar (SVS) fellowship to work at the Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Germany. After my Ph.D., I spent another year at IIG as a Research Associate and then moved to Japan to join as Research Fellow at Kyushu University. There I worked on the interannual variability of lower thermosphere. After spending a year in Japan, I returned to India, where my project got selected for the National Postdoctoral Fellowship. Under this fellowship, I worked at the Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad, to analyze the ESA SWARM satellite magnetic data to diagnose small-scale variations in the ionospheric electrodynamical processes.
Apart from my mainstream research, I took an interest in several other activities including, participating in a paleoclimatology field campaign in the Spituk region, a solar eclipse campaign in Mount Abu, spectroscopic analysis of rock samples from the Lonar impact crater, and several public outreach activities. I contribute as a photographer to a science outreach group called “Space Geeks Mumbai” run by my friends.
When not doing research, I spend my time doing cycling, hiking, photography, and timelapse videography.
